Youth Concerts

Oregon Symphony Youth Concerts provide high quality artistic experiences in music for students from Kindergarten through 8th grade. Our developmentally appropriate family of Youth Concerts offers comprehensive, sequential learning experiences that encourage active participation by students, parents and teachers alike. We believe that music is an essential and equal part of the total school curriculum and, while our concerts cannot replace sequential arts education curriculum in the school, they are designed to help schools meet and exceed the Oregon Department of Education’s Arts Content Standards curriculum objectives and deepen a student’s enjoyment and understanding of classical music.

2011/12 Young People’s Concert:

“The Composer's Toolbox”

Seats are still available for all performances!

Composers use all kinds of tools to express their musical ideas.  For this 2012 Young People’s Concert, the Oregon Symphony will perform a variety of pieces illustrating these “tricks of the trade”.  Why is Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 one of classical music’s most powerful compositions?  How did Haydn show he had a real sense of humor in the 2nd movement of his Symphony No. 93?  How did Charles Ives use folk tunes in his Country Band March to express a sense of small town fun?  Join Resident Conductor Gregory Vajda and narrator Pamela Mahon for this 50 minute concert as we peek into the composer’s toolbox for insights and inspiration!

2012 Composer’s Toolbox Program
